Maharashtrian Tadka Rice


500 gms cooked basmati rice

1 onion finely chopped

1 tbs. oil

1 tbs. cumin seeds

1 tbs. mustard seeds

1 tsp. turmeric

1 tsp. chilli powder

1 green chilli (whole)

Coriander to garnish

Salt to taste



  1. Heat up the oil in a small frying pan.
  2. When it is hot, add in the cumin and mustard seeds.
  3. When the cumin seeds start to sizzle and the mustard seeds start to pop, add in the onions and the green chilli.
  4. When the onions are soft put in the rice, turmeric, red chilli powder and salt. Mix thoroughly - you might need to sprinkle a little water so that the turmeric blends in. 
  5. Garnish with coriander and serve hot with yoghurt or dal.
